What is the use of Maxalt?
Maxalt 5mg is a potential therapy commonly used for the treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura. This is an FDA approved medicine and can be used both in adults and in pediatric patients 6 to 17 years of age. The active ingredient present in the Maxalt is Rizatriptan, which is an orally administered medication.
What is the mechanism of action of Maxalt?
Maxalt or Generic Rizatriptan comes under the class of medicines known as 5HT1-receptor agonists. This medication induces vasoconstriction by binding to 5-HT1B/1D receptors located on intracranial blood vessels and exerts its therapeutic effects in the treatment of a migraine headache. It also stops the release of calcitonin peptide from sensory neurons in the trigeminal nerve.
How to take Maxalt 5mg:
Commercially, Maxalt is available in the strength of 5 mg or 10 mg for the acute treatment of migraines in adults. The dose of Maxalt varies and depends on the condition of the patient the dose can be changed. In pediatric patients, dosing is based on the patient's body weight. The suggested dose of Maxalt is 5 mg in patients weighing less than 40 kg, and 10 mg in patients weighing 40 kg or more. You have to ingest the one Maxalt tablet whole with a full glass of water, do not break the tablet. After consuming a tablet, if your headache does not entirely go away, or goes away and raise back, take a second tablet two hours after the first. It is recommended not to take more than 30 mg of Rizatriptan in a day.
What are the contraindications while using Maxalt?
- Maxalt is not supposed to be used in the clinical condition such as peripheral vascular disease or any bowel disease, uncontrolled hypertension, underlying heart disorders like coronary artery disease, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, and hypersensitivity to Maxalt.
- You should not use this medicine if you have used a MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days, such as Isocarboxazid, Linezolid, Methylene Blue Injection, Phenelzine, Rasagiline, Selegiline, and Tranylcypromine.
What are the precautionary measures while using Maxalt?
- Never administer other migraine treatments such as other triptans or ergotamine at the same time as Maxalt.
- Make an appointment to discuss this with your doctor if you find that Maxalt does not relieve your migraine.
