Advair Diskus is one of the best and effective medication that is commonly used for the treatment of asthma and its symptoms like wheezing and shortness of breath. This medication can also be used for the treatment of (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema). It is available as inhalation form that contains two medications Fluticasone and Salmeterol as the main active ingredient. This medication is used for the long term in people with COPD, and in the case of asthma, this medicine is for short-term treatment until symptoms are well controlled with other medicines.
Mechanism of Action of Advair Diskus
Fluticasone comes under the class of drugs known as corticosteroids, which shows therapeutic action by reducing the irritation and swelling of the airways. Salmeterol falls under the class of drugs known as long-acting beta agonists. It produces action by opening airways in the lungs to make breathing easier.
What are the contraindications of Advair Diskus?
- You should not use this medication if you have a severe allergy to milk proteins a food or any ingredient present in the Advair.
- An individual should not use this medication if he/she is suffering from a weak immune system, diabetes, glaucoma, tuberculosis, and osteoporosis.
How to use Advair Diskus
Advair Diskus is available in a powder form, which comes with a special inhaler device pre-loaded with blister packs containing measured doses of the medicine. The device opens and loads a blister each time you use the inhaler. Usual adult dose of Advair for Asthma is one inhalation of Fluticasone 100 mcg-Salmeterol 50 mcg, Fluticasone 250 mcg-Salmeterol 50 mcg, or Fluticasone 500 mcg-Salmeterol 50 mcg orally twice a day. The maximum dose is Fluticasone 500 mcg-Salmeterol 50 mcg orally twice a day. Usual for the treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Maintenance dose is Fluticasone 250 mcg-Salmeterol 50 mcg (1 inhalation) orally twice a day, approximately 12 hours apart.
What are the side effects of Advair Diskus?
Muscle pain, bone pain, nausea, headache, vomiting, throat irritation, white patches in the mouth or throat, cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, ongoing cough, hoarseness and deepened voice.
